Broward County Public School District Adopts LifeStories for Kidsâ„¢ and S.S.GRIN Programs

CARY, NC (April 6, 2009) – SELmedia announced today that Broward County Public Schools in Florida selected its award-winning LifeStories for Kids™ Character Education Program as well as its S.S.GRIN Bully Prevention Program for use in elementary schools throughout the district.  Broward County Public Schools is the sixth-largest public school district and the largest, fully-accredited public school district in the nation.

“We are very impressed with the quality of SELmedia’s programs,” said Sharon Dolinsky, Coordinator of Elementary School Guidance for Broward County Public Schools.  “Their programs are research-based and are fun to use so we know we’ve made a sound investment in our children.”

Used in schools across the country, LifeStories for Kids™ is a captivating, multimedia character education program that combines evidence-based practices for skill building with the engaging and ancient art of storytelling.  This easy-to-use teaching tool helps children explore, enhance, and reinforce understanding of good character traits and prosocial skills.  Backed by a 3-year scientific study conducted for the National Institute of Mental Health, the lessons in LifeStories have been proven to significantly decrease shy and withdrawn behavior as well as fighting, teasing, and other forms of direct and relational aggression. The program correlates to state Language Arts standards and has been shown to have positive impact on academic performance and standardized test scores.

SELmedia’s S.S.GRIN (Social Skills Group Intervention) is an effective group counseling program that has been used in hundreds of school, clinic, and community settings to reduce bullying and help children with peer and relationship problems.  Children who have poor peer relations become increasingly isolated and are at risk for poor outcomes.  S.S.GRIN addresses this problem by teaching the social skills that research shows are critical to peer acceptance.  Multiple studies have shown that S.S.GRIN is highly effective from early childhood to adolescence:
•    24% increase in “Being liked by peers”
•    44% decrease in aggression (especially for bullies)
•    63% decrease in antisocial affiliations
•    Results hold up over multiple years
