S.S.GRIN A

Why S.S.GRIN-Adolescent is so special:

School professionals, clinicians and parents agree: adolescence can be tough. Adolescence is viewed as a critical, and often conflictual, period of development due to the biological, social, cognitive, and self-definitional/personal identity transitions which occur during this time. S.S.GRIN-A targets this significant period and includes the skills, issues, and themes specific for early- to middle- adolescents (ages 13-16 years). The 12-week, step-by-step curriculum is designed to be delivered in a school or clinic setting and includes parent-involvement. The group experience provides a rich context in which youth can learn from, and model for others, a number of strategies for handling social dilemmas. Using easy-to-follow scripts, leaders guide teens through thought provoking and fun activities, allowing them to discover and practice skills with a set of peers similar to the ones they will encounter outside of the group. Embedded in evidence-based methodology, S.S.GRIN-A takes the science of helping youth build basic behavioral and cognitive skills and brings it alive with the art of modern imagination. It is serious fun!

Why social skills matter:

Extensive research shows that problems with making and keeping friends have a significant negative impact on a child's functioning and mental health. In particular, social interactions during adolescence are thought to have a distinctive impact on shaping longterm patterns of both intra- and interpersonal functioning. Peer problems contribute to school failure, alcohol and drug abuse, serious aggression and criminality, and depression. Futhermore, evidence reveals that improved peer relationships foster not only a happier, more confident teen, but promote peaceful school climates and stronger academic achievement

S.S.GRIN-A is grounded in research

To illustrate the benefits of S.S.GRIN-A, a study was conducted using a community sample of adolescents aged 13-16 years-old (N=72). (The findings described here will be submitted to the Journal of Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology). Youth were recruited through flyers posted in schools and community agencies, school counselor referrals, or community agency referrals. Participants were randomly assigned to Treatment (N=38) or a no-treatment Control (N=34). Trained clinicians with either a Masters or Ph.D. in psychology or a related field administered S.S.GRIN-A within a clinical setting. Identical pre-post measures (self-report and parent-report) were administered approximately three months apart.

Preliminary results examining the magnitude and direction of change in functioning for each group revealed multiple significant group differences. For example, youth who participated in S.S. GRIN-A showed:

  • Improvement in prosocial behavior whereas control youth showed a decline
  • Decrease in aggression, whereas control youth showed an increase
  • Decrease in anxiety
  • Improvement in self-esteem whereas control youth showed a decline
  • Additional results demonstrated that youth who completed the 12-week program reported feeling significantly happier and having a better relationship with their parents. In contrast, children who did not receive S.S. GRIN-A showed worsening functioning in these areas. Overall, evaluation results support the efficacy of S.S.GRIN-A for enhancing youth’s social-cognitive and social behavioral skills as well as increasing self-efficacy and self-esteem.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT S.S. GRIN-A

"The adolescent program you have developed is engaging and challenging, yet practical and comprehensible I have seen students make strides in their willingness and ability to exchange ideas about relationships and day-to-day verbal exchanges.
